CHARACTER DETAILS

Name: Tech
Canon: Star Wars: The Bad Batch
Canon Point: End of Season 1
Age: Actual: 12ish, Apparent: Mid-late twenties

Heba or Tian? Heba. Tech's pretty technology-oriented as it is, and in some amusing ways his personality does reflect some of Heba's traits already.

Acquired Ability: Machine Control. (I gave up trying to look through that wikilink because it killed my browser badly, so I resorted to a TTRP Superhero game PDF I remember I had. I figure a copy/paste of the thing would help- doubt I'll use stuff like the Collateral but I thought otherwise there was a pretty good overview.)

Personality Traits: Please summarize your character's personality by giving a list of six traits, three positive and three negative.

  • Intelligent +
  • Confident +
  • Tactical improviser +
  • Emotionally obtuse −
  • Very much an over-explainer −
  • Knowledge ≠ Wisdom −

Suitability:
I like the urgency thrown right at you from the start! Way to kick things off! Rebel forces, risky missions and questionable usage of chip implants? Sounds like a typical day for Tech! I thought it'd be interesting to see how he adapts to things. The planet alignment and tethers also look like they'll be a lot of fun to explore, and quite a way to get to know other characters.

CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE

What are your character's feelings on freedom? How would they define freedom? How important is it to them? Would they fight for it, or have they fought for it in the past? If they have, how did they go about it?

Freedom isn't actually something that Tech has specifically given much thought to. Being what he is, it's probably not farfetched to figure there's some conditioning what with being created for the singular purpose of being a soldier, to fight a war on behalf of a vast Republic. They haven't been given much choice from the start, and early influence and training have solidified what they are now that it's difficult for them to imagine a life as anything else. There's no regret for this as without the need for an army, they wouldn't exist, but now with no specific need for them, freedom is almost stifling for their not having any real idea of where to go nor what to do next.

Choice is a freedom that is more relatable, and choosing to do what they do and to stand by their own reasoning is monumental. It's not just having to follow orders, not that his squad exclusively did so, but then they've always had more freedom in comparison to standard clone soldiers due to the way their group operated,

While they haven't directly sought to fight for the freedom of others, their work as mercenaries has made them cross paths with those who seek such help in some form or another. The jobs they take are initially for payment to help them get by, but they've shifted priorities more than once.

Describe a formative moment in your character's life, something that changed them and defined who they are as a person.

The execution of Order 66 and the end of the war was a pivotal moment for Tech and his entire squad. It brought many things to light, and forced them to rethink a lot of things such as their allegiance and purpose. Under a new Empire where most if not all clones were 'reprogrammed' to be loyal and follow all orders without question, the Bad Batch chooses to operate on their own.

It's a little difficult to pinpoint a moment that's really changed Tech otherwise. For the most part he's been pretty consistent to his nature. He still looks to Hunter for his ultimate say in things as their sergeant and remains loyal to his squad. It'll be interesting to see if there will ever be a time when Hunter makes a decision Tech doesn't agree with. Even with the later revelation of their brother Crosshair's free choice to serve the Empire, he comes to acceptance of this because of his understanding of his brother's nature. Tech does however voice his disagreement in that decision.

Does your character have a favorite person? If so, how would they describe that person? What do they like about that person? What do they dislike? If they don't have a favorite person, what would they look for in a favorite person? What traits would draw them to another person? What traits could they tolerate that others might not be able to?

Maybe favorite isn't exactly the right word, but it's probably Hunter. Of the squad he's always been the most level-headed, someone whose opinion Tech respects, and not only because he's their sergeant. Hunter always looks out for the rest of them. He also makes the major decisions for the team. There's no one else that Tech will look to for approval on a matter, even if he doesn't always seek approval for acting on a plan.

What has your character's arc been like so far? How have they developed from their first appearance to their canon point?

As a member of an experimental unit given a loose leash when it came to carrying out orders, Tech and the rest of Clone Force 99 hardly knew defeat. Normally operating solo, they were called in to work alongside "regs" as they refer to the standard clone troopers, as well as General Skywalker during the battle on Annaxes. This experience gave him and his brothers the opportunity to connect with others outside of their squad, and to realize that there were 'normal' clones that they could respect as fellow soldiers and even call friends. They successfully completed 65 missions prior to their final one on Kaller, where Order 66 was put into play and abruptly changed their perspective on things.

Save for the fact that they'd until then always been Republic-funded, Tech's considered their squad to be self-sufficient. He had no objections with the decision to desert after the questionable orders given by the newly established Empire. They'd be winging it, but it didn't register as a major concern at first. As an endless fount of information, Tech had the general idea of what they needed to do, but execution always proves to be vastly different from expectations. The latter has become doubly so now that they have the addition of a young girl as part of their crew. He's quickly become just as protective of her as much as the rest of the squad, and while he doesn't relate with her on the same level as Wrecker can, he's been willing to teach her things and doesn't discount her ability or knowledge despite her age. Then again, she is older than them.

Their most recent venture has left them truly with no choice but to move forward. On the upside, perhaps the Empire will right them off as KIA along with the destruction of Tipoca City, the cloning facilities on Kamino. They've reached an understanding with their wayward brother Crosshair. It's still bittersweet to acknowledge that your brother still adheres to his belief that the Empire is the route to take, but at least they've managed to clarify that just because they want different things, they're not enemies. Still, the galaxy is proving to be a rapidly changing place.

How would you like to continue your character's arc in the game? How would you like them to develop? What would you like to have them accomplish?

It's been a building case of adjusting to a new lifestyle. Tech had just started to get used to this loose sort of mercenary life with his brothers and his sister, and outside of the fact that they were no longer working under military authority and their missions are more ranged, nothing has truly changed, at least in key things. Having him suddenly apart from a vital part of who he is will force him to have to learn more about trusting others and operating alone in a foreign environment. Not being able to completely rely on the skills and specialties he's defined himself by will also make for some interesting development. There's a lot to explore by way of possibilities and a lot for him to learn. It might be scary, it might force him to actually start to get more in touch with the emotional side of things that he otherwise hasn't learned to process at the same level that normal people do. He'll have to open himself up to other people in ways he's probably never really considered, and these Tethers are going to be a fun complication of a layer to do so as well.
